When a critical email lands in your inbox, a presentation goes poorly, or an investor turns you down, the causal sequence feels instantaneous: The event happened, and therefore I feel devastated.

This assumption—that external events directly dictate emotional states—is the default human illusion. But if an event directly caused an emotion, every person exposed to the exact same situation would react identically. Two founders can receive the exact same rejection; one falls into a week-long spiral of self-doubt, while the other feels a surge of energized focus.

The event is identical. The emotional output is opposite. Something critical is sitting between the stimulus and your reaction.

The ABC Framework

In the early 1960s, psychologist Albert Ellis, founder of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), codified this middle step into what became the engine of modern cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): The ABC Model.

Ellis demonstrated that human emotional experience is governed by a three-part chain:

  • A — Activating Event: The objective, verifiable facts of a situation (what actually happened, stripped of interpretation).
  • B — Belief: The subconscious rule, assumption, or story your brain immediately applies to that event.
  • C — Consequence: The resulting emotional state and downstream behavioral impulse.

The core insight of the model is uncomfortable: A does not cause C. B causes C.

You rarely have direct control over the Activating Event. But the Belief—the cognitive lens between what happens and how you react—is entirely editable.

The Neuroscience of Cognitive Reappraisal

Decades after Ellis operationalized this model, neuroscientists confirmed its structural mechanism inside the brain.

When an unexpected setback occurs, subcortical structures like the amygdala generate a rapid threat assessment, triggering a physiological stress response before conscious thought fully registers. However, pioneering research by psychologists James Gross and Kevin Ochsner demonstrates that the prefrontal cortex can down-regulate this automatic arousal through a process known as cognitive reappraisal.

Functional MRI (fMRI) studies show that when an individual actively identifies and challenges an emotional belief:

  1. Executive Engagement Increases: Activation rises in the dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex—the brain regions responsible for logic and inhibitory control.
  2. Limbic Arousal Drops: Amygdala hyperactivity decreases sharply, dampening the body’s fight-or-flight signaling.

Around the same era, psychiatrist Aaron Beck identified that these “B” steps often take the form of automatic negative thoughts—instantaneous cognitive shortcuts that operate beneath conscious awareness. Left unexamined, the brain mistakes these automatic interpretations for objective reality.

Completing the Loop: From ABC to ABCDE

To transform the model from a passive diagnostic tool into an active mental engine, cognitive therapists expanded it to include two operational steps: Dispute (D) and Effective New Belief (E).

Consider how this sequence shifts real-world behavior:

  • Activating Event (A): An investor rejects a founder’s pitch.
  • Automatic Belief (B): “This rejection proves the company is failing and I’m a fraud.”
  • Consequence (C): Acute shame, leading the founder to freeze for three weeks and avoid making sales calls.

If the founder assumes A directly caused C, he is helpless; he cannot rewrite the investor’s decision. But when he isolates B, he can execute step D (Dispute) by cross-examining the belief like a defense attorney questioning a hostile witness:

“Did the investor actually say the company is failing?” No—they specifically stated the startup was too early-stage for their fund’s current mandate.

This interrogation yields E — an Effective New Belief: “One rejection is a single data point about investor fit, not a verdict on my capability.”

The revised belief produces an entirely different behavioral Consequence: the founder updates his pitch deck and schedules five new meetings the following week.

The Mental Cross-Examination

The goal of emotional reframing is not toxically positive thinking. It is accuracy. Automatic beliefs are frequently catastrophic projections or distorted assumptions formed under immediate stress.

The next time a sudden wave of anxiety, anger, or overwhelm hits, execute a four-minute audit:

  1. Isolate A: Write down only the objective facts, as if reporting a court transcript. Eliminate all emotional adjectives.
  2. Expose B: Write down the exact narrative your brain attached to those facts. Look for rigid words like “always,” “never,” “should,” or “proves.”
  3. Trace C: Map the emotional state and behavioral impulse that narrative created.
  4. Execute D: Challenge step B. What concrete evidence contradicts this interpretation? What alternative explanation fits the data?
  5. Lock in E: State a calibrated, evidence-backed belief to replace the automatic assumption.

You cannot always choose the event. You can almost always choose the belief. The emotion follows the belief, not the event.
